About Our Members by Phil Brown

Bill Hardy will be doing his favorite show May 3rd and 4th. It's the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival at the Howard County fairgrounds (on MD route 144). This is a fun and unique show with lots to see for the whole family, such as, animals (sheep, llamas, alpacas, rabbits,) sheep shearing contests, sheep dog trials etc., and it is free. No pets please because of all the show animals.

Gerry Headley will demonstrate wood turning at the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University in Washington DC on April 21st. This event will be from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm to show cancer patients the art of woodturning and it's ability to provide therapeutic expression. Small crafts will also be available for donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. To volunteer as a turner for this demonstration or to donate some of your crafts to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, contact Gerry at (410) 286 5958, gerryh3333@aol.com, or just bring your crafts to the April meeting. Exhibit Opportunities

CAW at Artisans Center - Follow Up by Phil Brown

Together with friends, I enjoyed visiting our exhibit at the Artisans Center in Waynesboro, VA on August 18th.  It was a beautiful display in the back portion of a large well-stocked retail shop.  Unfortunately, only one piece had sold from the show, a nice burl cap piece by Tom Boley.  As mentioned last month, Mike Vore attended the opening, and posted his pictures on this web site: http://mike-in-columbia.smugmug.com/gallery/3199155/1/176329369#176329369
Photos printed here are from the opening and my visit.

Other Stuff

The nationally popular Woodworking Show will be in our area at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, Va. on March 16, 17 and, 18, 2007. Show hours are: Friday 12:00AM till 7:00PM, Saturday 10:00AM till 6:00PM, Sunday 10:00AM till 4:00PM

The Capital Area Woodturners Club has again been invited to participate in the show. We will be allocated enough space to conduct woodturning demonstrations and to display some of our finished work. CA Savoy, 703-765-7268, email cadjsavoy@cox.net, will coordinate all show activities for the CAW. Annually, this is a favorite activity for our members.

This is a great opportunity for us to promote, and provide information about, our club; display our work; demonstrate the beauty and diversity of wood-turned pieces; and generate interest in our chosen craft. Attendance at these shows is generally 5,000 to 10,000 people over the three days.

We plan to have three mini-lathes set up to be used by CAW members for the entire show. Those who feel comfortable turning in front of an audience are encouraged to sign up to demonstrate. All others are requested to sign up to staff the booth, answer questions, show off our displayed turnings, and promote our club and wood turning.

Please bring a few of your finished turnings to be displayed while you are at the show.  Demonstrators should do projects that take no more than about 30 minutes, if you take too much longer, you tend to loose your audience. No power sanding and keep hand sanding to a minimum.

A volunteer work schedule will be provided at the February and March meetings. We plan to have enough participation to schedule three people demonstrating and two manning the booth on two or three hour shifts each day. Volunteers get free admission to the show. You should go to the Show Office at the entrance to the show and get your pass for the day you are assigned. Come in early and visit the show or stay after your tour and see the show.
And remember “WE are guests of the WW Show and are given these booths for our activities free of charge, therefore you are not permitted to sell your items nor display price tags on them at this show.” If some one is interested in your work, give them one of your business cards and have them contact you later.

Also, for security purposes, until the show opens each morning, you must not be out of our booth and wondering around the floor. If this occurs, you may be asked by the security or show staff to leave the show. We will need a setup crew for Friday at 1000 to get the booth set up. Contact me for scheduling, information in paragraph 3, abo

• A member asked for sources of a clear epoxy for use as a hardener, sealer, and/or surface coating on turned wood. Several sources are given below. Remember this is hazardous material. Use a good charcoal filter mask, eye cover, and gloves for your protection!! Work in an exhaust hood or outdoors. Accumulated vapors are explosive. Use cleaner plus vinegar for brush clean up. Vegetable oil and corn meal to clean your skin. Cure treated pieces for a week in a place that won't contaminate the air you and your family breathe.

1. Polyamide Epoxy Clear Sealer/Finish, CM36-00IM37, by Benjamin Moore & Co industrial maintenance coatings. Available through local retail stores at $80 for one gallon of each of the two components (resin and hardener). Mix only the amount you expect to use. Also get their Clean Up Thinner, M95. Pot life is 8 hours. Get their spec sheet M73 M37B0 for temperature and other requirements, which is probably available at the store or on their website, www.benjaminmoore.com. (Information provided by Andy Blackwell.)

2. Duron has a two part clear Polyamide Epoxy Primer/Finish, Dura Clad, Industrial Coating. Number 33-031 3 1. The parts are available in quart or gallon containers. The Duron store would likely have to special order the epoxy from the warehouse, and clerks at your local store may not know about it.

3. P/C #100 CLEAR, Polyamide Epoxy Coating by Torginol Inc.. A two part clear epoxy paint, made for wood. Available in 2 gallon kits ($80± per kit, depending on shipping cost), and thinner-cleaner ($16/gal plus shipping, but these prices are not current). Minimum order, $200. Pot life for equally mixed resin and hardener is 12 hours. The two parts are storable for over 1 year. Obtain from Torginol Inc., 710 Forest Ave., PO Box 102, Sheboygan Falls, WI 53085-0102. Telephone 920-467-2471. Can pay phone order by credit card.

This epoxy works well for hardening soft wood, primarily near the surface only, except end grain which is penetrated more deeply. May take 2 or 3 applications for very decayed wood. Can be built-up over small holes, indentations, and cracks, and then sanded to a smooth surface. Best to allow one week to cure before sanding. (Experience of Phil Brown.)
